Why do garage door cable break

Garage door repair cable is needed for a couple of reasons:

    • Cable rusts. If you see rust at the bottom of your garage door tracks there is a pretty good chance that the rust has gone to your cables when your garage door is closed. The rust will cause the cables to break since the springs are pulling constantly on the cable.
    • Lack of proper tension from spring. When your garage door is open, you can see if the tension from your cable around the drum. If there is not enough tension, you will see the cable loop above it. When the garage door opener closes, cable may jump over the drum groves and the whole spring system will be compromised. Door will come down from one side but the opposite side will not. Get your garage door repair chicago

How to know when a garage door cable breaks

The garage door cable on one side snaps near the top of the door. The door starts making funny noises when opened and closed. And when it closes one side sits higher than the other, with a gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. You can get r a new cable and installed it youryself but it can be extremely dangerous since they are connected to your spring system.

The most important thing is to get it wound properly on the take-up spool so it doesn’t bind as it rolls up and unrolls. If it’s binding, it will make a loud snap or pop as it raises and lowers.

You may need to reposition the drum on the shaft connected to the long horizontal spring at the top of the garage door. This is because the new cable has not stretched like the old one, and may cause the door to sit higher on the new side. Please note that it is not safe to use your garage door opener when the door has a broken cable. This could cause additional problems too your door and opener.

There is usually a set screw of some sort on the spool that you can adjust to get the door to sit level.

What to do when a garage door cable comes off

The problem is if the fully wound spring needs to be adjusted. (the video below  gets around this problem by not actually working on the spring, and working on the door when is is in the up position, when the spring has about one wind of tension on it) Many people attempt work on springs with improvised tools such as screw drivers.

A coworker in the garage door trade attempted such a procedure. His screwdriver slipped and it was driven through his hand. Working on the garage door torsion springs without proper tools and knowledge is highly dangerous.

Look carefully to determine why the cable came off - rollers out of alignment, anchor bracket coming loose, etc.  I am surprised to see that Chads answer is no longer on this question. This video explains what to do when the cable comes off. Later it shows the repairman adjusting the spring tension. He does not give details. Please do not attempt to adjust the spring tension. It is very dangerous unless you know exactly what you are doing. If not call the garage door spring repair professional.

How to do a Garage Door Cable Repair in Chicago

Replacing a frayed or broken garage door cable is not very difficult to do.  The job safely it's important to  understand how a garage door extension  spring lifting system opens the door at  the bottom corners of the door  there are bottom brackets attached to  the side of the bottom bracket is the  end loop of lifting cable.

The cable runs  parallel with the vertical track loops  over the pulley at the top of the door  around a pulley at the end of the  extension spring and attached to the  horizontal track when a door is closed  the garage door Springs are stretched and  there's a lot of tension on the cables,

    Springs, and Hardware.

    1. Disconnect the  power from the opener you may have to  turn a breaker off or pull a fuse  disconnect the door from the opener.

    2. Raise the door manually if one of the  cables is broken with the door from the  broken cable side make sure that the  broken cable doesn't get caught on  anything as the door is opened some  doors are very heavy and you may need  help to lift the door this 8x7 door  weighs 90 pounds you'll be disconnecting  the lifting springs for the door to  prevent the door from crashing down and  breaking or hurting you.

    3. Clamp a pair of  vise grips onto the track just below the lowest roller on the garage door when the door  is open the springs are compressed  they've done their job and lifted the  door and there is now very little  the tension left on the cables hardware and  springs with the opener disconnected the  power off and a clamp at the bottom of the garage door it's safe to remove the rest of  the tension from the lifting  table you'll find a s hook that is  hooked into the frame of the door mark  the position and remove the hook.

    4. Remove the garage door cable loop from the bottom  bracket of the door take note of how the  cable goes through the pulley fork  that's attached to the end of the  extension spring  then feed the end of the cable through  the pulley fork  pre-made cables can be purchased you'll  need to know the height of the door to  get the correct length typical  residential door Heights are seven or  eight feet.

    5. Measure the existing cable  they have different thicknesses if you  think that the existing cable is the  the wrong size consult the door owner's  manual or the door manufacturer measure  the old and new cables.

    6. Clamp a pair of vise grips onto the  correct length  you  don't use the large hole that's for the  S hook.

    7.  Feed the new cable through the  pulley fork thread the cable over the top of the pulley put the loop around  the bottom bracket of the door hold the  end of the lift cable and give it a  little tug double-check that the cable  loose through the pulley at the end of  the spring.

    8. Reattach the s hook to the  the horizontal frame then repeat this  process for the cable on the other side  of the door after both cables are  replaced double check that the cable  loops are connected to both plates at  the bottom of the door and that the  cables are correctly exceeded in the  grooves of all four pulleys

    9. Remove the  vice grips from underneath the bottom  the garage door roller of the door manually open and  close the door and check to see that the  cables or boys don't catch or bind on  anything reconnects the door to that  opener reconnect power
